We are electronics engineering students in the Higher Colleges of Technology (HCT); throughout this major we studied different courses, and one of them is Sports, Leisure and Society. In this course we have been asked to do a case study about a sport that we are interested in, so we have chosen to find out more about the bowling sport.
When we started our bowling sport case study first of all we have looked through online websites, and we also looked at some videos related to this sport. Secondly we conducted some interview questions to ask one of the managers at Emirates Bowling Federation Center.
Through our online research we have found that the bowling sport goes about 2000 years back to the Roman Empire and the Ancient Egyptians which they played it a little bit different from now. Nowadays it is enjoyed by around 95 million people worldwide and continues to grow through entertainment media. Bowling refers to a variety of sports and leisure activities in which the player throws a bowling ball down a lane which is usually a flat wooden surface and the target is to knock over 10 pins, that’s also called the norm. Each game is divided to ten frames and each one of them allows the player to knock out the 10 pins twice; the number of pins knocked down in each frame is recorded and a total will be made as each frame finishes. A “strike” is made when the player knocks down all the 10 pins. After all the frames progress the player with the highest score wins.
We read in the Emirates Bowling website about the UAE Bowling Association (UAE BA) that was first founded on the 1st of November 1981. From that the Emirates Bowling Federation (EBF) progressed. On the 5th of January 1982 they gained a membership at the Federation International DesQuillers- Asian Zone (FIQ-Asian Zone), and then to the World Tenpin Bowling Association (FIQ-WTBA), the world governing body for bowling, two years later in 1983. In 1988 the World bowling champion was Mr. Mohammed Khalifa Al Qubaisi, the president of the EBF in the present time. So we thought that it will be a great idea to interview one of the managers of the center.
After that we went to Khalifa International Bowling Center to interview Mr. Ahmed Al Ali manager at the EBF. Mr. Ahmed started his athletic career in football from 1978 to 1987 and then he started playing bowling from 1990 to 2009 because after practicing and learning it he was much more excited about it. In 2010 he joined the Emirates Bowling Federation as a manager. To choose a player he explained, after making a bowling competition they choose the players with the highest records and train them 3 days weekly for 4 hours to get them involved in the team. The team consists of a team manager, coach and the players and the only way for the team to succeed is to share respect between each and every member. He noted that the UAE government motivates the members of the EBF center by giving them all the comfort needed and teaching them how to go through challenges and take risks. As a manager Mr. Ahmed does his best to treat all the members equally and gives them hope and motivation they need. Even though Mr. Ahmed is a manager but still he likes working as a team to reach the target aimed. He added that the EBF’s target is to get the name of the United Arab Emirates raised in all forums.
Finally, we got the chance to play with our classmates and enjoy our time there. Best regards to the Emirates Bowling Federation (EBF) for their best reception.
